Gadding and learning a thing or two

On Monday night we went to see these guys in Sarlat. An amazing group of musicians from Bucharest. Brilliant.

And then on Tuesday we went to see a performance of The Importance of Being Ernest under La Halle in the square.

Jack. I am afraid I really don’t know. The fact is, Lady Bracknell, I said I had lost my parents. It would be nearer the truth to say that my parents seem to have lost me… I don’t actually know who I am by birth. I was… well, I was found.

Lady Bracknell. Found!

Jack. The late Mr. Thomas Cardew, an old gentleman of a very charitable and kindly disposition, found me, and gave me the name of Worthing, because he happened to have a first-class ticket for Worthing in his pocket at the time. Worthing is a place in Sussex. It is a seaside resort.

Lady Bracknell. Where did the charitable gentleman who had a first-class ticket for this seaside resort find you?

Jack. [Gravely.] In a hand-bag.

Lady Bracknell. A hand-bag?

Jack. [Very seriously.] Yes, Lady Bracknell. I was in a hand-bag—a somewhat large, black leather hand-bag, with handles to it—an ordinary hand-bag in fact.

Lady Bracknell. In what locality did this Mr. James, or Thomas, Cardew come across this ordinary hand-bag?

Jack. In the cloak-room at Victoria Station. It was given to him in mistake for his own.

It's a shame that everything comes at once in August. But we had a really good time.

And thank you so much to Spit and Baling Wire for teaching me how to put the clips and paste things into the blog. It has taken me so long to work out how to do it that the words are somewhat lacking. But you can't have everything!

  1. Ah...you have an Ayak!
She helps me so much with things that seem impossible to do...so if Spit and Baling wire is anywhere near as helpful you have a treasure!

  2. Ah yes...but she still can't view video clips which are on Youtube and other sites banned in Turkey...and she still can't manage to do it via a proxy....which is a real shame...because all I have are blank white spaces when I look at this post.

Sounds like August has been very enjoyable for you

  3. Maybe if Spit and Baling Wire comes to see how I've done, she can sort you out too Ayak. You tried to help me before but I didn't realise that you had to paste on to the edit html page not just the compose page and that's why it didn't work.

Is there a youtube equivalent that Turkey will accept? And how clever (or big brotherish) of it to stop it getting to you. Must be in the same way that we can't watch BBC television unless through iPortal or equivalent.

  4. Rosie it is very big brotherish..theres been a ban on Youtube and about 5 or 600 other sites for about 4 years now. I can get videos on DailyMotion though.

As far as BBC is concerned, I got rid of my TV and now subscribe to Filmon.com (here's the link http://www.filmon.com/tv/). It costs 9.95 dollars a month and I get all the UK TV channels on my laptop. It works out cheaper than having a TV and Digiturk...which is actually useless and only shows BBC Prime and BBC World....BBC Prime is useless..loads of very old repeats and the only soap they show is Eastenders and thats two weeks behind the UK.
Filmon is absolutely brilliant for me.

  5. Rosie, I started watching a remake of 'Ernest' on TV with Judi Dench as Lady Bracknell. Very disappointing especially the 'handbag' scene which as we all know is the kingpin of the film/play. I turned it off in the end!

  6. Hey there! It took me a while to get over here but, better late than never.

The video clips look great! I was sure that it was only a problem of which page you were pasting your copy into. Congratulations! Once you get in the habit of doing it regularly you will get faster and you'll have plenty of time for your words.

I'm delighted that I could be of some assistance, Rosie!
