I will look up where it is.
Ayak - I was chatting to my brother about this and he sent me this link http://www.recipes4us.co.uk/Chestnut%20Recipes.htm which seems to have an overwhelming number of recipes.I think I shall mainly just be throwing in a handful with roasted stuff which I do quite a lot of.
Jen - yes we have a bowl of chestnuts sitting next to the fire about this time of year but the novelty soon wears off (more quickly than the burnt fingers)
Pliers - noticed in the paper that it is the first nut market in the town tomorrow. We thought we'd go and see how much a sack of walnuts is when it's for locals rather than tourists. I have been paying 3 euros for 200g of shelled ones. A friend from the town says that her Portugese neighbours still make a living by shelling walnuts.Rosiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01944155516559194389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2298010393460618333.post-30625518860037411332010-10-12T10:27:48.545+02:002010-10-12T10:27:48.545+02:00Rosie,

It was so much fun.

I saw my first basket of chestnuts on sale at last Saturday's market and also a sign along the road advertising them at $3/2kilos. Not bad!The Pliershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09877106616685886293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2298010393460618333.post-77369148580558866832010-10-11T16:54:22.642+02:002010-10-11T16:54:22.642+02:00Rosie, I've been imagining walking through you...Rosie, I've been imagining walking through your woods on an early Autumn morning :-)

We occasionally collect sweet chestnuts from Norleywood, and have a couple of evening of roasting them on the fire but the novelty wears off. Roasting them with the spuds sounds interesting, let us know how it goes.

I'm impressed with H.O.'s plans for the long hike. And your Morning Glory is indeed glorious :-)

I like the new blog title!
Love, Juniper xxJuniperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10930937754917509956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2298010393460618333.post-86309190057876982902010-10-11T16:27:42.058+02:002010-10-11T16:27:42.058+02:00I'll be interested to know what you will be us...I'll be interested to know what you will be using the chestnuts for after their 8 day soaking.Ayakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16903896106779269050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2298010393460618333.post-51519001980175755322010-10-11T14:44:45.622+02:002010-10-11T14:44:45.622+02:00I am trying to think what I did with a simplistic ...I am trying to think what I did with a simplistic map of France, divided as to peoples' staple foods...and chestnut flour figured largely around...I think Villefranche de Rouergue..though that's from memory and well open to correction!

I was just reading Theordore Zeldin's stuff on France and in the food section he draws attention to the assumption that France is divided into butter and olive oil using areas...he reckons until late into the nineteenth century most poor people cooked in water!
It's a fascinating section and I must look up his references.the fly in the webhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04563871975125538755noreply@blogger.com
